September 7, 2005

 S/V “Elysian” 1982 Bowman 84’ Staysail Schooner

Surveys conform to recommendations published by the American Boat and Yacht Council.

Introduction

 Scope of Survey;

Acting upon the request of Mr. Thomas B. Rowe of Newport Yacht Management the surveyor attended  “Elysian” on the morning of Sept. 5th, 2005.   The purpose of the survey was to ascertain the vessels present market value for the purpose of import duties.  The surveyor conducted an “in the water” appraisal survey with the vessel lying at anchor north of Goat Island, Newport, RI.  The ships papers were on board and complete.  A sea-trial was not conducted and the machinery was not run at the time of survey.  No attempt was made to inspect the underwater machinery or exterior surfaces below the waterline.  Electronic equipment was inspected but not operated.  Percussion testing was limited to highly loaded areas of the deck.  Moisture meter readings were not taken.

The vessel was surveyed without the removal of any part, including fittings, carpet, screwed or nailed boards, anchors and chain, fixed partitions, instruments, clothing, spares and miscellaneous materials in the bilges and lockers.  Further, no determination of stability characteristics inherent structural integrity has been made and no opinion is expressed thereto.  This survey report represents the condition of the vessel on the above dates, and is the unbiased opinion of the undersigned, but is not considered to be an inventory or warranty either specified or implied.  The statements in this report are the judgments of the undersigned surveyor.  He will not be held accountable or liable for any errors or omissions.  Acceptance of this report is acceptance of these terms.

Conduct of survey;

The mandatory standards promulgated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG), under the authority of Title 46 United States Code (USC); Title 33 and Title 46, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and the voluntary standards and recommended practices developed by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) have been used as guidelines in the conduct of this survey.  The use of the word appears is intended to that a close or complete inspection was not possible or was deemed inappropriate at the time of this survey.  The deficiencies reported herein reflect the conditions observed at the time the survey was conducted

The report is valid only in it’s entirety.  Portions of this report submitted to any entity could be construed as fraudulent representation of associated vessel.

The following report is the result of a strictly limited survey for appraisal purposes only and is not to be considered a full condition survey.

Summary

Elysian is a fine example of a customized Ocean 80’ hull from 1982.  This venerable Doug Peterson design was modified by Southern Ocean Shipyard to be 84’ LOA.  Elysian is rigged as a staysail schooner with centerboard.  All working sails are deployed by furler.  Her interior was designed by renowned designer John Munford and handsomely executed by the Bowman Yard in the UK.  The furniture and cabinetry are of laminated teak panels with solid teak trim.  The cabin sole is solid teak and holly flooring laminated to backing.  The layout could be described as a raised saloon, center cockpit, world cruising yacht.  Three guest staterooms are located aft all with en-suite heads and crew’s quarters are forward.  She is designed to accommodate six guests in luxury and four full time crew in nicely appointed accommodations forward.  Décor is warm and luxurious yet uncluttered and functional at sea.  Elysian is reported to have had five caring owners including the present and is reported to have made numerous passages in her 23 years.  Although she has been diligently and professionally maintained and updated, she remains a twenty plus year old sailing vessel.  In all the entire vessel is in extremely good condition; however there are two systems that remain original to the boat that have not been overhauled or replaced as far as the surveyor can ascertain, those systems being the spars and the winches.  It is the opinion of this surveyor that these two primary systems must be nearing the end of their working life expectancy.

Valuation  It is the opinion of the undersigned independent marine surveyor that the current US East Coast market value is approximately $1,125,000.

The values appearing in this appraisal are subjective and are based on comparable yachts and the yacht resale market at the time of the survey.  The values are intended for insurance and financial evaluation only and are not intended to influence the purchase or sale of the vessel.
